The Best Proposal Spots in Switzerland – From a Local Photographer

You’re planning a trip to Switzerland with your partner, and you thought about proposing to them during the trip to make it even more memorable, but you have no idea where to do that? Well well, I’m here to help! As a local elopement and couple photographer that takes couples to the mountains all year round, I know what makes a good proposal spot, and where to find them. Today, I’m sharing some of the best proposal spots of Switzerland.

A note on sustainability: Switzerland, as many other countries, is starting to suffer from overtourism. As an elopement photographer, I rely on nature to do my job. This is why this article contains suggestions that aren’t only located in the most famous areas of Switzerland, but also in lesser known regions, that are equally as beautiful. I took the decision to not share the exact spot sometimes, as I want to protect these places as much as possible (so that you can also continue enjoying them freely on your travels!). I’m more than happy to share the exact spots with my clients of course!

Finding the Right Proposal Spot – What to Take Into Consideration

Depending on the time of year, your schedule, the type of people you are, your trip can vary vastly. Do you want a proposal spot that is easily accessible, but that may be more crowded, or are you hikers, envisioning a proposal on top of a lonely mountain at sunset?

You’ve come to the right place, because you can find the best of both worlds in Switzerland. Lots of mountains are accessible thanks to gondola stations that are perched on the highest peaks, as well as more secluded spots, if you know where to find them.

Best Proposal Spots in Switzerland – The Different Regions

Here’s an overview of the regions you are most likely going to visit on your swiss trip. They don’t represent the whole country, but they all offer a variety of landscapes and advantages. I’m a photographer that lives in the South of Switzerland, and I would love to have you discover places that aren’t on the typical touristic route, hence why these suggestions aren’t the typical ones you’ll see online.

The Rhône Valley and Valais/Wallis Region

This region is home to the famous Matterhorn, but not only! If you’re only going to Zermatt, you’re (in my humble local opinion) missing out on so many hidden gems. The Valais region consists of the Pennine Alps, that are crossed by the Rhône river. This makes up the main valley. But on each side of the Rhône, there are smaller valleys, with stunning locations. This part of Switzerland is less famous than the Bernese Oberland for example, which means that if you’re looking for a quiter spot, you’re likely to find it here. Wether you’d like to hike, or to find an accessible spot, Valais has it all.

My tip: if you want to plan a proposal in that region, renting a car might be useful, as there are less gondola stations than in other stations.

The Riviera

Along the shores of Lake Geneva lies a small region called the Riviera. With cute cities like Vevey or Montreux, this part is perfect if you want to experience a more authentic swiss city life. Overlooking these cities lies the beginning of the Alps mountain range. You can take small mountain trains and climb up those mountains, to discover stunning views over the Lake Geneva, without having to hike!

The Jungfrau Region

Of course, one cannot talk about Switzerland without mentioning the most famous – and advertised – region: the Bernese Oberland and the Jungfrau region. This is the most touristic region of Switzerland, and the one most people will visit during their trip. There, you can find the famous towns of Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, and a whole lot of gondola stations and cogwheel trains, that will take you on top of mountains without any effort.

One disadvantage of that, is that your chances of having a private moment for your surprise proposal are very slim, as there are people most of the time. There is most of time space to spread out and get away from the crowds, but you will probably never be on your own. The workaround that is to book a mountain hotel, allowing you to stay on the mountain after the gondola has closed.

Best Proposal Spots in Switzerland – By Season & Accessibility

Access to a certain spot can vary greatly depending on the season. Most mountain roads close from October to May, but places that you can access by gondola often open for winter (December to March) and summer (June to September/October). Other places are open year-round. Be sure to check in with the tourism board, or with your local photographer!
